A Friendly Note

If you're in a big store and trying to check out, and you see the light on a checkout go off, it's rude as shit to run for that line.

"I saw the light go off and figured you were headed to lunch so I knew you'd be quick."

Appropriate response:

"Yes sir / maam-very quick.

And if you're still in my line after I finish my lunch break, I'll show you just how fast I really am.

But if you'd rather not wait for me to come back, that next line is open...the one right over there."

"Yes maam/sir, I am on break. Unfortunately for you, when the light goes off, so does power to the register. And it's on a timer, which won't allow it to be turned back on for 15 minutes. It's how they enforce our breaks, since we really don't like to take them."

Of course, if it were me, and I were to use a line like that, it would be to some jerk that could get me in hot water.

On the other hand, the management is required to give you your full breaks, so with good management (someone who came up from the ranks), you might be able to get away with it.
