Elksplosion

So, very early Friday morning, I was headed across on a lonely stretch of highway (do we have anything else here?) and I had a close encounter of the elk kind. I'm fine, but my car is totaled. Yes, I'm a little banged up but all things considered I got off damn lucky and I'll take it. So many things could have been that one little bit different and I'd have been done for.

As is I got off with a mildly sprained wrist, some bruised ribs, a whack on the head and a really clear impression of the rear view mirror on my right forearm. Plus assorted bumps and bruises and aches and bits of glass everywhere, of course.

Without further ado, and in no real particular order, I give you the Elksplosion.

Man, you don't do anything small, do you? ;-) Glad to hear you're okay. And your "elk through a woodchipper" description was beyond appropriate!

I didn't even get the one of the back seat that really showed it up, loki. Not sure how I missed it but it's not there... but for now I'm tired of playing with it so I may upload more later.

At least the elk didn't end up inside the driver's seat.

Then we would have had word of a farmgirl/elk-slposion.

Stay safe. Get a bigger rig. Something with roo-guards.

Well, the important thing is that the iPhone still works, right?

What is it with us and large hoofed mammals?

And that last pose looks kinds familiar. It's becoming a classic!

It's good to here your ok, I've seen deer hit by semi's that were less mangled.

Why are the pics dated 2007? Forget to set the date in your camera?

Seatbelt on?

Dark or light out?

Glad your OK.

Glad you're okay! OMG! Instaground elk.

Holy crap, FarmGirl!
The elk looks like ate a grenade, and your car doesn't look much better...I'm SO GLAD you're okay.

Stupid critters need to stop committing suicide.

JRebel said...

Humm, ya'll really have a thing with ballcaps and cigarettes for creatures that harm vehicles out that way.

Anyway, glad you are okay Farmgirl.

Damn girl... Glad you're okay, but you REALLY don't have to try to top AD... (do like the shot with hat and smoke though)...

Damn happy to see you're ok. That one could indeed have been MUCH worse!

On an unrelated note, I'm glad to see I'm not the only one under 65 who drives a Crown Vic (who isn't a cabbie or cop, of course)

Comes from hanging around with guys like AD.

At least you've now answered that pressing question, "What calibre for elk?"

Congrats on the escape.

Does your insurance pay for elksplosions?

I've taken out two whitetail deer with my car.
But this?
You had someone looking out for you!!
Wow....
I mean WOW!!!

Glad to see you're ok.

The ride not so much but I don't think anyone could replace FarmGirl.

Frequent reader/occasional commenter here; +1 for the bigger-vehicle/mongo-grille-guard suggestion. You need some more rolling mass and something on the front that will deflect a large mammal to one side.

My buddy had a F350 with a front bumper he handmade out of a section of frame rail from a R-model Mack. He hit a 300lb whitetail buck at around 45 mph; it brought the truck to a dead stop and pinwheeled the deer close to 150ft down the road. Didn't leave a mark on the truck. There's no substitute for solid steel.

Glad you're OK. :)

Wow. Good luck the elk (mostly) stayed on the passenger side, But it really says something about car design that it can come out looking like that and the driver is alive at all. Looks like that car did it's most useful work in the last couple seconds of it's working life, and turned it into " A little banged up". Airbags and laminated glass and stuff can really pay off sometimes. Maybe time to buy a lottery ticket?

Wow, cool pics. Glad you made it out safe (mostly). Enjoy reading the blog.

wow ... i'm glad you made it out okayish ... AND did you really have a baseball cap and cigar handy for the AD-type shot?

Farmgirl said...

Farmdad is responsible for the hat pic. since the hat is one he actually wears yes he did have it handy. The hat in the original AD pic was a twin of that one.

Wow....

Thank God you are ok.

unfortunately I don't think Bloody Elk gore isn't cover under the iphone warranty. You should see of your car insurance will pay for replacements of items in car damaged in accident. Or maybe Otterbox will get you a new cover if you give them a story about how it protected your iphone from Elk explosion.

Oh and just how many shampoos did it take to get the elk bits out of your hair....ewwwww.

glad your injuries are minor and I agree with other's recommendation of large vehicle!!

Artwork for Blogorado III:
- swap in an elk-head instead of the deer-head.
- swap in a Crown Vic for AD's Dakota.
- Change the tagline to "I have issues."

And, as the others have said, Thank God you're OK.

Glad you're OK. Cars can be replaced, FarmGirl's can't.

First AD hits a deer, then you hit an elk. What's next, a buffalo?

Glad you're okay! Hope the ribs and other bumps and bruises get better soon.

What a spectacular end to a car - hope you never top that!

And DaddyBear - Don't Tempt Fate! I am so taking the truck, never mind its gas milage, for my next visit. And stocking an orange cap and cigarette in case of wayward cow.

You need a bigger ride. Probably hit a Water Buffalo Next.

Hey ... nix to the idea of mixing with a buffalo. I got real close to a couple two weeks ago in a drive-in park in Quebec. They're big ... I mean big. I think you'd need a Kenworth rig for one of them.

Glad to see you're okay ... as others have said, you're not replaceable.

Regards.

Holy Chit, Batman. You are fortunate not to be dead is all I can say.

Glad you are okay, that could have been a lot worse. Big problems around here with large ungulates wandering across the roadways. A few nights ago on my way home from work, I had to slow down to avoid a Jeep-seeking moosile...

Wow. Good thing you were driving a real car!
